Use the Docs Agent
Agent is where you draft and edit content directly in Google Docs. It can also use web search and add citations when you ask for sources.
How do I open the Agent tab?
- Open a Google Doc.
- Go to Extensions and open AI for Docs.
- Click 🤖 Docs Agent (or open the sidebar and select Agent).
- Type your request and press Enter or click the send button.
What can the Agent do?
- Append a new draft to the end of your doc.
- Edit and rewrite existing sections to match your preferred tone and structure.
- Generate images for your headings when you ask for images.
- Attach PDFs or images to give the Agent extra context.
How do I get citations?
In your prompt, ask the Agent to use web search and include citations. AI for Docs appends citations under a “Citations” heading in the inserted output.
How many credits does the Agent use?
The Agent is charged based on generated output length. Longer outputs use more credits.
If you ask the Agent to rewrite the full document, Free supports up to 20,000 characters, and Pro supports up to 1,500,000 characters.
Where does the output go?
Depending on your request, the Agent will either append new content to the end of your doc or apply edits to the document directly.
